Robert F Kennedy, made a very apt observation once. He said, each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope. Crossing each other from a million different centres of energy and daring those ripples build a current that can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance.
The Amte family, has contributed many such eternal, ever powerful centres to society over three generations. Team Aadyaa had the proud privilege to have a conversation with one of the illustrious torch bearers of this inspiring family – Dr Sheetal Amte-Karajgi.
Born and brought up in Anandwan, young Sheetal came in contact with people from all walks of life at a very early age. Her sense of duty, stemmed from her and she longed to do her bit for the most marginalized people of society – the leprosy affected. A brilliant mind ensured enviable laurels in academics, and Dr Amte vowed to use it to do good for her people. Based in Anandwan, she currently heads the Maharogi Sewa Samiti (MSS) Warora, one of India’s leading non-profit organizations.
Founded by her grandfather and source of inspiration, Dr Baba Amte, Anandwan is a world renowned, presidential award winning, cooperative village carved from barren land by these crippled social outcasts. Through a self-sustaining economy, Anandwan produces goods such as cloth, food grains, milk and household items worth 40 million annually. Till now the parent institution Maharogi Sewa Samiti has qualitatively enriched the lives of about 2.6 million rejected, dejected people through various healthcare, rehabilitation, education, agriculture and economic empowerment. Anandwan is all set to become the first smart village of India.
Dr Amte feels there is a rise in the number of talented youths opting for social work rather than cushy corporate jobs, an optimistic sign indeed. She likes to spend time with her son, and indulge in photography. A person who feels very strongly about her roots, Dr Amte has always had a strong connect with traditional and simplistic jewellery. Her Aadyaa connection stems from her penchant for jewellery which can be worn every day. Having come across Aadyaa after a friend’s recommendation, she instantly loved the simplicity of the designs. A fan of the presentation and enthusiasm that resonates from all of Aadyaa’s endeavours, she’s an Aadyaa Addict for life.
We at Aadyaa consider ourselves fortunate to be associated with such an illustrious personality, and hope to be associated with Dr Amte for the years to come.
